Souren Mousavi
Souren Mousavi was born in Persia in 1969 to an Iranian mother and Bahraini father with ancestry linked to the Iranian monarchy. Graduating with a Fine Art Masters degree from the University of Tehran, Souren began to explore an interest in women's rights. She was inspired to use her art to convey her thoughts and feelings; becoming an active campaigner.
Souren's primary subject; the female form, examples of which are included in her forth coming exhibition; were deemed pornographic and offensive by the regime. This contributed to her arrest and eventual imprisonment. There began a painful and traumatic period over several years; ending in safety in the UK.
Souren incorporates traditional Persian art forms within her work. Her stunningly moving and powerful images either in watercolour, oil, drawings or limited edition prints provides the viewer with much more than just a beautifully aesthetic image.
